Mr. John Doty is in his tenth year as choir director at New Castle. He is a 2008 graduate of Butler University, where he earned a Bachelor of Music Education with Honors. While in college, Mr. Doty was a member of the Butler Chorale for three years and Jordan Jazz, Butler’s premier vocal jazz ensemble, for two years. He served as Jordan Jazz’s Vice President of Music in 2006- 2007.
At New Castle, Mr. Doty directs the Chorale, A Ca-fellas, Concert Choir, and Statesmen Singers. He is also the director and vocal arranger of the Red Hot Blues, New Castle’s premier show choir. In addition to his teaching duties at NCHS and NCMS, Mr. Doty is the Assistant State Chair (Middle School) for Indiana Music Education Association Honor Choir and Circle the State with Song. He has also served as clinician and guest conductor for the Indiana Vocal Jazz Festival and Circle the State with Song festivals. Mr. Doty is a member of NAfME (The National Association for Music Education), Indiana Professional Educators Association, and an alumnus of Mu Phi Epsilon (Kappa Chapter), an international professional music fraternity.
Outside of his professional life, Mr. Doty is very active in his community. He is the pianist at Honey Creek United Methodist Church (Honey Creek, IN) and Co-Music Minister and organist at Sixth Street Christian Church (DoC - Middletown, IN). He is also a member of the Middletown Lions Club, and serves as the Emcee of the New Castle ICAP/Christian Love Center annual “Back to School Festival.” Mr. Doty enjoys spending time with friends and family, rooting on the Butler Men’s Basketball team (GO DAWGS!), kayaking, camping, and spoiling his dogs, Zeke and Zoey.
Director of Vocal Music
Mr. Matthew Hurst, New Castle native and 2005 graduate of New Castle Chrysler High School, is entering his eighth year of teaching, his fourth at New Castle. Mr. Hurst graduated with honors from Taylor University in 2009, with a degree in Music Education. During his time at Taylor, he was a member of the Taylor University Chorale and Taylor University Sounds Chamber Ensemble. He served as an officer of The Taylor University Chorale from 2007-2009, and traveled with this group to the Bahamas, Greece, Egypt, and Jordan. He was also an active member of the university opera program, playing lead roles in La Perichole, The Pirates of Penzance, and The Marriage of Figaro.
At New Castle, Mr. Hurst directs the Chamber Choir, Vocal Revolution, Concert Choir, and New Harmonies. He is also the director of the Swing Street and Madrigal Singers, New Castle’s vocal jazz and madrigal ensemble. Additionally, Mr. Hurst directs the middle school Swing Choir. Professionally, Mr. Hurst has participated in NAfME (National Association for Music Education), the Indiana Vocal Jazz Festival, and Team Ripley, a committee designed for the promotion and implementation of technology in the classroom. Mr. Hurst was named an Outstanding Future Educator for the State of Indiana in 2009.
Mr. Hurst married his high school sweetheart, and fellow New Castle graduate, Emily (Winter) in 2008, and they have one son, Danny, born in 2012. After graduating college, Mr. Hurst served as the head of the choir department for Milan High School and Middle School in southern Indiana for 4 years. Mr. Hurst is an avid guitar player and songwriter, favoring artists such as Brad Paisley, James Taylor, and Jack Johnson. When he isn’t in the classroom, he is active in his church, enjoys playing old video games, reads philosophers such as C.S. Lewis, and spends as much time as he can with his family and friends.
Mrs. Judy Hubbard is in her third year as accompanist for New Castle Choirs. Mrs. Hubbard retired in 2012 from a 39 year teaching career in vocal music. During that time, Mrs. Hubbard’s students excelled in ISSMA contests and were winners of many gold ratings. Mrs. Hubbard was the director of two show choirs at New Castle High School. The “Dynamiques”, the women’s select group, were the state runner-up winners for ISSMA’s small school division in 2009, 2010, and 2012. The “Red Hot Blues”, the mixed select group, were the state champions in 2012. She has previously served as a board member and chairman for ICDA’s show choir committee.
Mrs. Hubbard is also the founder and director of the Raintree Children’s Choir in Henry County. Mrs. Hubbard is currently the director of the Habitat Homeschool Choir in east central Indiana. Mrs. Hubbard is a judge for ISSMA. She is also an adjunct student teacher supervisor in Butler’s Education department. She is also the church choir director for St. Anne Catholic Church in New Castle.
In 2013, Mrs. Hubbard served as interim director of Butler’s Jordan Jazz. Mrs. Hubbard served as the Adminstrative Assistant for the Butler Vocal Jazz Festival for 10 years. In 2012, Mrs. Hubbard was a “Hero in Education” for Rotary International in Henry County. In 2007, she received the Teacher Excellence Award for Henry County. In 2006, Mrs. Hubbard was the IMEA Teacher of the Year for secondary music education and the Wal-Mart Teacher of the Year for Henry County. Mrs. Hubbard has a BS and MA degrees from Ball State University. She lives in New Castle with her husband, Bill.
